At the Indian School of Business, each and every applicant is unique and exceptional in their own sense. However, to give yourself that extra edge, there are a few parameters which you could highlight through the application form. These parameters will make you stand out and also help us to assess you in a better manner.
Leadership Potential
Applicants who have consistently demonstrated an ability to take up initiatives in their work or academic life are encouraged to apply.
This is assessed through recommendations or references included in the application. Students must include recent recommendations from their current workplace, preferably from their direct supervisor. While most applicants may not have had a chance to demonstrate leadership skills at the public level, initiatives at work or in their personal life will help the Admissions Committee assess the applicant’s potential.
Diversity
The ISB welcomes diversity in all forms like work experience, educational background, nationality among others. But above all, the ISB values the quality of the work experience gained by individuals and not just the number of years they have been working in a certain sector. Applicants are encouraged to describe their backgrounds and provide details on how they can contribute to the classroom experience.
Academic Background and Analytical Ability
The programme is rigorous, and since its one year duration makes it even more challenging. Therefore the evaluation keenly considers the student’s academic performance. However there is no cut-off score. Likewise, we also assess analytical ability based on GMAT. Here again, we do not have a cut-off GMAT score. While a good GMAT score helps, an average score can be compensated for by achievements in other areas.
Work Experience
The ISB prefers applicants with full time work experience (preferably of two years). Exceptional candidates with lesser experience will be considered for deferred admission. The diverse professional experience of students contributes to the rich and stimulating learning in the ISB programme. We are specifically interested in how they have contributed to their organisation or added value to their professional roles. Successful applicants must demonstrate managerial and leadership potential, maturity, drive and focus.
Admissions will evaluate all applications on the above basis. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed as part of the selection process.

Essay 2: What are your short term and long term goals? How will the ISB help you achieve the same? (300 words max)
This is again a variant of the standard question found in the applications for many other top Business Schools. For example,
- Discuss the factors that influenced your career decisions to date. Please describe your professional goals for the future. How will the M.B.A. experience influence your ability to achieve your goals? (Wharton)
- Discuss your career progression to date. Why do you want an M.B.A.? How do you envision your career progressing after receiving the M.B.A.? (Tuck)
- Specifically address your post-M.B.A. short- and long-term professional goals. How will Darden assist you in attaining these goals?
- Briefly assess your career progress to date. Elaborate on your future career plans and your motivation for pursuing a graduate degree at Kellogg.
- What are your post-M.B.A. career plans? (Harvard)
As explained above this is the most common type of essay question, asked on virtually every business school application. This question asks you to present, clearly and coherently, your all too familiar reasons for wanting to do an M.B.A and also why from the Indian School of Business (ISB). The question consists of a few distinct parts.
- About your past (How has your career progressed to date? What has motivated you thus far?),
- Your future (How do you envision your career progressing? What are your goals for the future?),
- Correlate both the above. The expectation is for you to relate the information to your present desire to attain an M.B.A from the Indian School of Business (ISB).
- How are these goals important for you and for the Indian School of Business (ISB).
Let this question create an impression about you as a person to the admissions committee at the ISB. It is similar to the moment in an interview when you shake the interviewer’s hand and smile- It is a critical step. The ISB admissions committee uses this question to ascertain your motivation, maturity, and focus. While undergraduate application essays are understandably fuzzy about career choices and goals, graduate business essays should, in contrast, be crystal clear. If you have vague reasons for pursuing an M.B.A., you need to reconsider your decision to apply to the Indian School of Business (ISB). Giving a vague response to this question is akin to having a weak handshake and not looking the interviewer in the eye and can create a bad impression.
You must accomplish a lot in this essay, so pay special attention to the structure, overall objectives and content as well. Again CrackISB team is strictly against following a template approach. We advise you to be honest and be your true self- Our Proprietary HR instruments form the starting point for this (There are many such tools in market, but nothing is customized for ISB admissions process). You can tackle the question by dividing your answer into four separate pieces. The first can be about your past professional experience. The second can discuss your future career goals. The third and fourth can be about how these fit into your plan and the school’s particular program. At each step, demonstrate why and how these experiences, goals, or attributes motivate you to get your M.B.A from the Indian School of Business (ISB).
In general CrackISB team recommends you to limit yourself to one career goal, if it is general. If you have a couple of different jobs in mind, that is all right, too. However, your reasons for them should be easily inferred or specifically stated in your essay. If you are truly unsure of what your goals are, admit so honestly rather than make up something which is not true. At the very least, though, give credible reasons for your indecision, and explain why you believe that ISB’s PGP program will help you overcome your ambivalence.
Even if the question does not specifically ask for it, articulate why the PGP at Indian School of Business (ISB) makes sense for you given your unique professional and personal goals. To do this well, you must spend the necessary time in introspection and also research the school. When you understand the school’s program and positioning, use what you have uncovered only if you can apply it to yourself. Do not write what you think they want to hear. ISB Admissions committee can spot this kind of insincerity from thousands of miles away. They also seek a heterogeneous mix of backgrounds and experiences. Therefore, trying to fashion yourself as a typical applicant can hurt you even if you do it well. The more honest you are to your real motivations and desires, the better your essay will be.

Essay 1: If we were to admit one more student to the class of 2012, make a compelling argument as to why that student should be you? (300 words max)
This is a modification of the standard question found in the applications for other Business Schools. For example,
- Your background, experiences, and values will enhance and diversify Kellogg. How? (1-2 double-spaced pages)
- The Darden School seeks a diverse and unique entering class of future managers. How will your distinctiveness enrich our learning environment and enhance your prospects for success as a manager?
The essay is about what is special or unique about you that will contribute towards enhancing the diversity and value to the class of 2012 at ISB. Most Good Business schools VALUE diversity among its students to enable valuable peer learning and provide a diverse perspective to its students and this is true of ISB as well as a globally reputed top Business School. How will you contribute to this learning and how much would you contribute to this learning? It is the answers to these questions, the ISB admissions committee is looking for. Every essay question on the ISB admissions application is geared toward the same thing. Committee members want to find out who you are, what makes you different from everyone else, and how you will contribute to the school if accepted. This question asks these things outright. Because it asks so directly what the admissions committee wants to know, this is one of the most common questions you will find every year. This is a combination of two questions- Why you want to do an MBA and Why (What qualities) should you be considered for an MBA by the Indian School of Business (ISB).
This is the best place to introduce yourself to the ISB admissions committee and tell them how your presence at ISB will add value to overall experience of other students at ISB. No one expects all the students to be a star performer at something (work, social networks, connections, extracurricular or the like), however a combination of all of these should make you a UNIQUE person.
Generic Approach:
Firstly let me start off with how NOT to approach this essay- The old and most ineffective way is to make lists of things and weave your essay around this list. You will miss out the big picture and purpose with such a narrow minded approach.
- For this question it is important to brainstorm about your qualities and characteristics before everything else. This is the most difficult, crucial and important part and this is where you can take the help of our proprietary HR psychometric instruments (Nucleus-PhyschoSCAN, Nucleus-TeamSCAN, Nucleus-JobSCAN). What sets you apart from everyone else? What words do friends, co-workers and family use to describe you? A person with an unusual professional background may use this question to turn this potential weakness into his strength. Anyone with a particular talent or calling, such as an athlete or a musician, can use that as a topic. Less obvious characteristics can work just as well and this is not realized by many. Are you one of those people who are forever getting tagged with an identity? Do people say, “You know Raj, the funny guy?,†or “There’s Bedha, the Quiz Wizard.â€
- If you consider yourself to be a fairly normal and average candidate you may feel apprehensive or nervous about not being able to identify yourself with any one particular activity or defining trait. As mentioned above, there is no reason to get worried about because a listing of qualities that make you unique is perfectly acceptable and will be true for most candidates. None of your qualities has to be particularly unique by itself. Whatever is real and true will work perfectly well. What words do people use to describe you? Are you a risk taker? An academic? A leader? Unusually goal oriented? Dedicated? Ethical? A good team player?
- The qualities you choose to describe are not nearly as important as how well you back them up and this is why we stress on presenting TRUTH to the admissions committee at ISB. Because this answer tends to contain many adjectives, you absolutely must provide solid examples demonstrating each quality you have listed. You can take examples from either your work or your personal life. You can even be creative and take an example from your childhood, if you wish, as long as whatever you choose effectively proves that you are what you say you are and not just writing a fictitious essay. Remember that the admissions committee at ISB spends roughly about 10 minutes on your essay, so get to the point and make it interesting and not just a summarization of facts in a list of bulleted items.
Lastly, because the question asks “Why should ISB take you?†it provides you with a perfect opportunity to prove that you have researched and targeted yourself to the Indian School of Business. Match your distinctiveness in whatever way is natural to the distinctiveness of the PGP programme at the Indian School of Business (ISB). Show the admissions committee that you are not just perfect for business school in general; you are perfect for the programme at the Indian School of Business (ISB).
