ISB SUPER LEAGUE 2011 LAUNCHED

September 27th, 2011

The Indian School of Business (ISB) Super League, known as the ISL 2011, was launched recently at the ISB campus. This marks the start of a three-month sporting season on campus, which will culminate in November 2011. The Guest-of-Honour at the launch this year was Gayatri Reddy, Co-owner of the Deccan Chargers. The four franchises this year are the Hyderabad Nizams, Titans, Raging Bulls and Hurricanes. Accenture is the official sponsor of ISL 2011.

A roar of excitement filled the air as the proceedings of the much-awaited ISL started after a hectic month-long preparation. The event was ushered in with a fine rendition of a Carnatic-style welcome song. Following the music, the audience was entertained to a series of foot-tapping renditions of all-time sporting sensations including “Wavin’ Flag”, which had soared to popularity during the football World Cup in 2010. The Dance Club also had the audience charged with some of their energising performances.

Gayatri Reddy and Professor Ramabhadran Thirumalai of the ISB, addressed the participants and members of the community. Once the event was declared open, each of the four teams officially introduced themselves and launched their sporting campaign for the year.

The ISL, a unique concept amongst B-schools, was conceived by ISB’s Class of 2010. Fashioned along the lines of the Indian Premier League, the ISL is an entirely student-managed sporting event that will bring together the ISB community in a season of competitions across 10 sporting games including cricket, football, frisbee, basketball and water polo. Points across games are added up to decide on the winning franchise.

Each franchise builds its own team through player auction. Earlier this year, the four teams were auctioned to students who bid for the teams using real money. The players for each team were then “sold” in a live auction using virtual currency.

This year, the total bid value for the four teams came up to Rs 18.1 lakhs, up from Rs 6.30 lakhs in 2010. The winning team takes home 60% of the prize money accrued from the bids. The runners-up get 35% of the prize money while the remaining 5% goes towards organising the tournament.

ISB STUDENTS ORGANISE A TRIATHLON FOR CHARITY

June 30th, 2011

Students, staff and faculty of the Indian School of Business (ISB), got together on Saturday, 4 June to run a triathlon consisting of a 5km run, a 15km cycling run and a 1km swim. The event was organised to raise awareness and money for Ashray Akruti, a charity catering to special children.

It began with an ardent wish by students to do something productive over the term break. A few discussions over Facebook, right in the midst of exams, led to an initial effort to organise the student body. Within a week, 60 participants signed-up to take part or volunteer in the event. The School supported the students through donations, participation from faculty and by providing any infrastructure needed.

The participants, who felt that it was a meaningful way for them to spend the term break, turned up as early at 6.30am to help with various things such as setting up the area and organising the participants. Despite the heat, many students came just to cheer and motivate their friends who were participating. This brought an atmosphere of camaraderie to the campus. It was heart-warming to see parents of students, who were visiting during the term break, also help out enthusiastically with time-keeping and in making sure that participants were adequately rehydrated during the events.

Most participants took part in single events but there were a handful, who tested their endurance by completing all three. Vivekananda Srivastava, a student, who took part in all three events confessed, “I competed because it was for a charity. I wouldn’t have done it if it was a race.”

The students plan to hold such events on a six-monthly basis in order to raise awareness and funds for charity and most importantly, to promote a sense of social duty in the ISB community.

The triathlon ended off with resounding cheers for all the participants and volunteers, who despite their exhaustion, left with a great sense of pride and satisfaction.

Announcing the new class, Deepak Chandra, Deputy Dean, ISB said, “The Class of 2012 is an eclectic mix of achievers, in line with our belief that diversity enhances learning, and truly develops leadership potential. Armed with cutting-edge knowledge and best practices, I am sure that this class will contribute significantly to the global marketplace “

Profile of the Class of 2012

Diversity Continues

The ISB encourages professionals from every background to join its Post Graduate Programme. Students come in with prior experience in functions like Sales and Marketing, Finance, Project Management, Architecture, Operations, Consulting, Research, Advertising, Travel, Tourism, Hospitality, Technology, etc. There are also niche profiles from the Armed Forces, Practicing Doctors and Surgeons, Entrepreneurs, Civil Servants, Fashion Designers, Shipping Crew, Entrepreneurs, Lawyers and Journalists among others. All this leads to an extremely dynamic and challenging class environment that is highly conducive to learning. The average work experience of the class is five years, and the average age is 28 years. The average GMAT score at 712 is comparable to some of the top global B-schools.

Highest Percentage of Women

The ISB has 167 women students, comprising 29 % of the class. This is perhaps the highest percentage among leading B-schools in India. The ISB is committed to increasing the number of women students in the class making it on par with global standards. This is aligned with the ISB’s endeavour to increase the representation of women in business leadership. Over the years, women have performed exceptionally well in their careers, post their stint at the ISB.

Global Representation

This year, the class has students from countries such as Italy, Spain, Russia, Austria, Australia, Singapore, Thailand, Mauritius, Belgium, Nepal, Canada, United Kingdom and USA. The presence of students from such a broad spectrum of countries makes learning at the ISB a truly global experience. This cultural diversity enhances their learning about customs, management styles, and ways of doing business in their respective countries. About 25 % of the ISB students come with international work experience.

Class of Achievers

It is not just academic excellence and work experience that the ISB looks for. Many of the students who joined the class have demonstrated multi dimensional leadership abilities. • India’s first Audio Book Author

New crop at ISB finds its colours match

May 24th, 2011

For 24-year-old Dheeraj C Reddy, a comfortable job in Bangalore after his bachelor’s in engineering was not satisfying. Drawn to the idea of social entrepreneurship, he quit the job and spent a year working with a start-up, training rural youth for jobs in the BPO sector. He is back as a student these days, and seems to be in good company, having found mates with similar interests.

For Delhi girl Jagriti Kumar, who did her honours in mathematics from St Stephen’s College, dance is an inseparable part of her life. She has choreographed several college events and concerts, but has also worked as an analyst with consulting firm Hewitt Associates. Four weeks into her new course, she has formed a group with a shared interest in dance and is planning events.

The youngsters are a random sample from the new class of 2012 at the Indian School of Business, where the one-year postgraduate programme in management has just commenced. The 573-strong batch also includes members drawn from niche professions like healthcare, fashion, shipping, law, journalism, Armed Forces and civil service.
The class of 2012 is an “eclectic mix,” says ISB deputy dean Deepak Chandra. It is “in line with ISB’s belief that diversity enhances learning, and truly develops leadership potential.”

Part of the reason for drawing in students with diverse interests is the B-school’s insistence on some work experience before admitting them.

Having worked in skill development, Dheeraj says, “We have an active group of 12 who are very interested in education. We have been sharing presentations about Class 12 education, middle school education etc. We are actually trying to come up with alternative business plan and exploring options for educationally backward areas.”

The students are in the age group of 24 to 42, with an average work experience of five years. Among them is an IPS officer from Himachal Pradesh. Dr Atul Verma, who practised as a doctor for two years before joining the civil service, says the course is a mid-career training for the supervisory roles ahead in his career. He expresses a preference to work in health or financial regulation areas, after the course.

For Jagriti, dance is a long-term career option as much as a consulting role is her immediate goal. Asked about her choice between the two, she tells Business Standard, “I don’t have to make a choice. Even if I have to work 16 hours a day, I’d still find time for dance.”

This year, the number of women students rose to 167, or 29 per cent of the class. Last year, it was 160 out of 569. The average GMAT score of the new batch is 712, which is comparable with leading global business schools.

Dheeraj says, “Once you have had some experience in the industry, there is no other school which caters to your level of understanding. The peer group here is amazing.”

The group has an influence on his career choice, he says. The choice is between a consulting job with a public services firm or back to the education field.

Asked about the insights he gained during his rural stint, Dheeraj says: “Yes, they [rural people] don’t trust corporates much. Then there is lack of opportunity. The other thing I found missing was there is a lack of drive. Their aspiration is to get a job right next to home.”

The drive is not missing among the students here, nor, it seems, with the management. The school’s second campus at Mohali would begin functioning from next year, with the total intake at 770. The two campuses would operate as a unified entity, with a common admission process.

Dealing with Personal Change

May 18th, 2011

This is a life-changing step. If you have a family, spouse, or partner, you will need to take a look at the changes ahead together.

Talk with Your Family
Make sure everyone supports your decision to pursue a degree and understands how the family’s lifestyle will change:

  • You will be very busy, with little free time.
  • You are likely to have less money to spend.
  • You will need to complete homework assignments, so you may be unavailable to your family even when you are home.
  • Find a School-Sponsored Organization for Spouses or Family

Some schools offer these organizations, and they can be valuable in assisting students with housing and other issues—many members have been through the transition already, so they can help you get oriented. You will develop a new network of friends in school, but your family will need a network, too.

Help Your Spouse or Partner Find a Job
If you are relocating and your spouse plans to continue working, your school placement advisors can offer suggestions on local search firms, temporary agencies, and other resources. Consider an on-campus job—as most schools have active temporary employment offices.

Look Into the Cost of Living and Housing
If you are relocating to a new area, get information from school admissions staff on the local cost of living. They can also tell you the best places to look for housing. You may want to live near other married students or students with children.

    Check out Housing
Few business schools offer on-campus room and board. If you plan to attend a school far from home, plan a trip to find a place to live. Your school’s admissions staff can recommend the best time to look for housing.
